A Korean celadon warming bowl, Goryeo Dynasty

SKU: 348

A rare Korean stoneware celadon 'bamboo' bowl, Goryeo dynasty, C12th.

The exterior is moulded with multiple vertical ribs which are marked at intervals with pairs of horizontal incisions in imitation of bamboo. Covered all-over with a crackled celadon glaze, and likely produced in Gangjin, this refined bowl was fired upon supports of white quartzite.

This sophisticated vessel likely served as a warming bowl for wine at an elegant gathering during Korea’s Goryeo dynasty (AD 918–1392), an era of supreme artistic refinement. With its decoration suggesting a cluster of bamboo stalks, it perfectly demonstrates the transformation of a Chinese vessel type to meet Korean aesthetic preferences.

Diameter 12.3 cm.

Provenance: from the collection of ambassador Francesco Rausi.

Condition;  overall age-related wear to the glaze. There is a repair to one side of the bowl which encompasses approximately a quarter of it's circumference. Pieces have been reattached, and there is some associated overpainting. Still, it is a rare and desirable piece.
