A Chinese lidded rice measure; Song-Yuan dynasty

This small jar was made during the 13th - 14th century, during the latter part of the Song Dynasty (AD 960 - 1279), or the following Yuan Dynasty (AD 1279 - 1368). and often referred to as a "rice measure". It has nail-head decoration around the shoulder and is coated, inside and out, in a variagated brown glaze. It is rare to find such an item with its original lid.

Quanzhou or Jizhou, Fujian or Jiangxi province, China.

 

Dimensions; approximately 8.5 cm diameter.

 

Condition is very good, with some small nibbles to the foot and mouth rim, and to the edge of the lid.

 

Provenance; Nagel Auction, From the collection of a German scholar, assembled between 1961 and 1966.
