A Chinese, black glazed, chicken-head ewer; C4-5th

SKU: 404

A rare Chinese, black glazed, chicken-head ewer; Six Dynasties period, C4-5th.

As this handsome ewer shows, chicken-head ewers of the late 4th century to early 5th century are tall with expanding shoulders being the widest point of the vessel. The double stranded handle joins to the dish-shaped mouth with a dragon's head. The non-functioning, double chicken-head, spouts are tall and straight. The black glaze terminates above the flat base, which shows kiln-support marks.

Height, 18 cm.

Provenance: from a Hollywood film director's family collection, acquired before 1995 in Hong Kong and Southern California.

Condition: A chip to the inner rim of the dish-mouth. The handle has an old repair where it has was broken as it joins the rim. There is a long circular mark to the body. Possibly aa hairline, but difficult to be sure. Glaze degradation.
